CHAZ (Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone) Demands – 2020

2011-Present, Authority, Blockade/Barricade, Date, Defining the Enemy, Disruptive Spaces, Occupation, Tactics of Disruption, Urban Spaces, White Supremacy

The Demands of the police-free Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone established in Seattle, USA on 8 June during the height of the 2020 Black Lives Matter Uprising. These included the abolition of the city’s police department and criminal justice system and the wholesale uprooting of Seattle’s racist economic, health, and educational structures.

Although we have liberated Free Capitol Hill in the name of the people of Seattle, we must not forget that we stand on land already once stolen from the Duwamish People, the first people of Seattle, and whose brother, John T. Williams of the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe up north was murdered by the Seattle Police Department 10 years ago.

We decided to call our magazine Adbusters by Adbusters (2020)

2011-Present, Date, Disruptive Spaces, Infrastructure/Data

Created in 1989 by Kalle Lasn and Bill Schmalz, the Adbusters magazine was created as an act of rebellion against consumer culture. Rather than allowing media to be a reflection of daily life, the creators of this magazine were attempting to transform media into a catalyst for change.
